Transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) is a rare disease characterized by the deposition of abnormal transthyretin protein as amyloid fibrils in various organs. Two primary forms of ATTR are hereditary (hATTR) and wild-type (ATTRwt). Transthyretin, which is made by the liver and forms dimers before becoming monomers, causes transthyretin amyloidosis. The symptoms of familial amyloid polyneuropathy usually appear when the patient becomes 30, though they can also appear in the early 20s or the late 80s. When cardiac biomarkers like troponin and the N-terminal segment of brain natriuretic peptide are found in unusually high amounts in the heart, they cause amyloid deposits that can aid in further illness identification. If too much amyloid protein begins to build up in the nerves, symptoms could get worse. Cardiac symptoms like arrhythmias, cardiomyopathy, neuropathy symptoms like peripheral neuropathy, and renal dysfunction occur.
