Kenya MRI Market Executive Summary

The Kenya MRI Market is at around $4.65 Mn in 2023 and is projected to reach $7.76 Mn in 2030, exhibiting a CAGR of 7.6% during the forecast period.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a type of diagnostic test that can create detailed images of nearly every structure and organ inside the body. It uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. The MRI machine is a large, cylindrical (tube-shaped) device that generates a powerful magnetic field around the patient and emits pulses of radio waves from a scanner. Some MRI machines resemble narrow tunnels, while others are more spacious. The intense magnetic field produced by the MRI scanner causes the atoms in your body to align in the same direction. Subsequently, radio waves are emitted from the MRI machine, which disrupt this alignment, causing the atoms to return to their original positions. As the radio waves cease, the atoms revert to their initial alignment and emit radio signals. These signals are then picked up by a computer, which transforms them into an image of the area being examined. This image is displayed on a viewing monitor.

Kenya has 9.6 units available per every million of its population. The market therefore is driven by significant factors like the growing prevalence of chronic diseases, supportive government initiatives, and growing awareness of early detection. However, high cost, limited healthcare infrastructure, and lack of domestic manufacturing capabilities restrict the growth of the market.

The leading pharmaceutical companies include GE Healthcare and Esaote for MRI machines. Canon Medical Systems, Allengers Medical Systems, and Philips Healthcare are also significant contributors to the MRI market, with continuous research and development activities.

Market Dynamics

Market Growth Drivers

Supportive Government Initiatives: Increased government funding and public-private partnerships facilitate the installation of more MRI machines in hospitals and diagnostic centers. For example, Kenyan government has a partnership with General Electric (GE) to support the financing of MRI scanners, making them more accessible and affordable.

Growing Prevalence of Chronic Diseases: The increasing prevalence of chronic conditions like heart diseases, cancer, and neurological disorders is fuelling the need for advanced medical imaging tools, such as MRI. Cancer contributes to approximately 7% of the total mortality rate in Kenya.

Growing Awareness of Early Detection: Public awareness about the benefits of MRI scans for early disease detection and improved diagnosis is on the rise in Kenya. This growing awareness fuels the demand for MRI services among patients and healthcare providers alike.

Market Restraints

High Cost: The high costs associated with MRI equipment can greatly affect market growth as healthcare providers and patients face budget limitations, affordability concerns, and accessibility challenges. These increased expenses hinder the acceptance and use of these innovative imaging technologies.

Limited Healthcare Infrastructure: The availability of MRI technology is often concentrated in major urban centers, restricting access for patients in rural or remote areas. The lack of adequate healthcare infrastructure and diagnostic facilities across Kenya can be a restraint for the MRI market.

Lack of Domestic Manufacturing Capabilities: Kenya has limited domestic production of MRI systems and relies heavily on imports, which can increase costs and lead times. The lack of local manufacturing capabilities and technical expertise can be a barrier to the wider adoption of MRI technology.

Regulatory Landscape and Reimbursement Scenario

The Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) is the main regulatory body responsible for overseeing the registration and use of radiological equipment, including MRI systems, in the country. All MRI systems in Kenya must be registered with the KNRA before they can be installed and used in healthcare facilities. The registration process involves evaluating the safety, technical specifications, and compliance of the MRI equipment with national and international standards.

The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is the main health insurance scheme in Kenya that provides coverage for various medical services, including diagnostic imaging. In the absence of comprehensive insurance coverage or government reimbursement schemes, patients in Kenya may have to pay for MRI scans out-of-pocket.
