UK Dental Care Telemedicine Market Executive Summary

The UK dental care market size is at around $933 Mn in 2022 and is projected to reach $1,317 Mn in 2030, exhibiting a CAGR of 4.4% during the forecast period. due to an ageing population and increasing demand for cosmetic dentistry. The major players in the market include large corporate dental chains, independent dental practices, and NHS dental clinics. The market is regulated by the General Dental Council (GDC) and the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The government plays a role in the market through funding and regulation of the NHS dental services.

Dental health in the UK is typically good, with a large majority of the population enjoying good oral health and regular access to dental care. However, there are considerable differences in oral health among various population groups. 18% of the population has had one or more of the following oral problems: difficulty pronouncing words, difficulty eating, embarrassment, self-consciousness, or a horrible pain in the mouth, and 23.4% of 5-year-old children in England have suffered tooth decay. Overall, the proportion of adults who have no natural teeth has decreased in recent years, whereas the proportion of adults who have very good or good tooth decay has increased. However, dental decay is a widespread concern among youngsters, particularly in poorer neighborhoods. Access to dental treatment in the UK can be difficult for some people, especially those on low incomes or living in poor areas. The NHS provides dental care to all UK citizens; however, appointment times can be lengthy.

According to patient data, 53% of respondents had not had a dental check-up in the previous year. Nearly 60% claimed the reason was an inability to secure an NHS appointment with their dentist (28%), being unable to register with an NHS dental practise (14%), or being unable to afford a routine NHS check-up (16%). In 2020, it was discovered that 85% of dental practises were closed to new NHS adult patients and 40% of dental practises were closed to new NHS kid patients. General dentists performed 12 million treatment courses in 2021-22, a 69% decrease from the previous year. This has propelled the growth of private dental care providers and subsequently high out of pocket expenditures due to partial coverage of expenses by insurance instruments.

Market Dynamics

Market Growth Drivers

General dentists performed only 12 Mn courses of treatment in 2021-22, a 69% decrease from the previous year, and 9 Mn children were denied dental care in the year following the first lockdown (March 2020 to February 2021), with the percentage of children seen falling from 58.7% to 23%. In the 24 months leading up to June 30, 2021, 18.2 Mn adults were not seen by an NHS dentist. Extended appointment schedules and limited in-time services have opened the market to private dental care providers who richly cater to patients in need with high-technology services and reported less downtime.

Market Restraints

High costs of care deter market growth as 16% of the population is unable to afford NHS or private dental care. This is lopsided across England, with 74% of respondents in the north seeing an NHS dentist compared to 49% in the south. On the other hand, just 29% of people in the North see a private dentist, compared to 45% in the South. The UK’s exit from the European Union has had an effect on the dentistry market – as the movement of dentists and dental care providers (including the various processes for the recognition of qualifications) is limited, import and export of dental equipment and materials, as well as drug supply Legislation governing health and safety, data protection requirements, and research and development – altogether has led to higher costs.

Healthcare Policies and Regulatory Landscape

The dental care market is regulated by the General Dental Council (GDC) and the Care Quality Commission (CQC), jointly. The dental care therapeutics and pharmaceutical costs in the UK are indirectly controlled by an agreement between the government and industry. The 2019 Voluntary Scheme (VPAS) is a commitment by industry, the NHS, and the government and will operate for five years, from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2023. The VPAS, a new voluntary agreement, went into effect in January 2019. Individual medicine prices are not directly controlled under the VPAS, however, the increase in branded medicine spending is limited to 2.0% each year for five years. The Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Plan (PPRS), which ran until the end of December 2018, was replaced by the new voluntary scheme. The PPRS scheme, which has undergone a number of substantial adjustments since its establishment, regulated framework for negotiations between the government and industry, and is subjected to five-year renewal. The PPRS did not directly restrict pricing, but it limited individual firm profits. Manufacturers are free to determine their own medicine pricing, but they cannot exceed their overall profit cap. Companies that are not covered by the Voluntary Plan are subject to a statutory scheme.

Reimbursement Scenario

The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) was set up to reduce regional variations in the availability of healthcare. The aim is to standardize healthcare across the country, thereby reducing the risk of a postcode lottery of care. NICE effectively acts as a gatekeeper for companies looking to have their medicines approved for use within the NHS. Those medicines that NICE rejects or has not yet approved tend not to be funded.
