Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder, caused when stomach acid, food, and fluids reflux to the oesophagus. This causes irritation of the lining of oesophagus, resulting in burning sensation. GERD is characterized by two cardinal oesophageal symptoms, including heartburn (reflux) and regurgitation. If left untreated for a prolonged period, it can cause inflammation of oesophagus termed as oesophagitis. Gastroesophageal reflux disease, which affects 1 in 10 people, is also called national disease of Koreans.
