Colorectal cancers are the malignant tumours of the colon and the rectum, which can lead to symptoms like blood in stool, abdominal discomfort, weight loss and more. These usually start by the formation of non-cancerous polyps, which can turn malignant over time. The polyps can be diagnosed by screening.

In Netherlands, colon cancer comes in the top 10 causes of death and disability combined. Even though colon cancer survival has increased in the recent years, Netherlands still has high incidence mortality compared to the surrounding regions. It is surpassed only by Hungary, Norway and Denmark.

In 2017, health care expenditures for colon cancer patients amounted to 597 million euros. This is 0.7% of the total expenditure on Dutch health. 87% of health care expenditure for colon cancer patients went to hospitals in 2017.

Approximately 15,000 new patients are added each year.
