Influenza is  a respiratory infection caused by  influenza viruses. Human Influenza viruses are members of the Orthomyxoviridae family. In Kenya, Influenza is present throughout but with exacerbations at some times of the year. Influenza incidence tends to be highest in the months of March-April, October-November and July corresponding with the southern hemisphere winters. Influenza-Associated Hospitalizations are high among children aged less than 5 years in Kenya. Vaccination is crucial in control of Influence to protect high risk populations from severe outcomes. Immunization is recommended for children from 6 months to 12 years and adults aged 60 and above.

Seasonal Flu vaccine market is majorly driven by the substantial burden of seasonal influenza in Kenya. An influenza surveillance study conducted between 2012 and 2016 across eleven sites in Kenya found that approximately 31% of medically attended influenza cases were of IBV (Human Influenza B Virus) type.

The Government of Kenya is working with partners like GAVI, UNICEF and WHO to introduce Seasonal Flu vaccine into their routine immunisation programme.

In Kenya, the National Influenza Centre (NIC) in collaboration with the U.S Army Medical Research Unit, Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and WHO have set up a surveillance system in sentinel sites across the country.
