Policy changes and Reimbursement scenario of Kenya Physiotherapy Services
Growth of the profession came in with increased challenges. It progressively became difficult for the public to differentiate between qualified from unqualified professionals, clinics that offer quality services and training institutions offering appropriate training. Known for its sporting prowess and a growing economy, the country also became an attractive destination for emigrant populations including health workers some with unclear training backgrounds and qualifications
In the absence of a regulatory body, the Kenya Society of Physiotherapists (KSP) performed minimal regulatory roles using powers delegated to it by the Ministry of Health. KSP however continued to lobby to have the profession regulated. It was not until 2014 that the Physiotherapist Bill was introduced in Parliament. With concerted efforts, the Physiotherapists Act No 20 of 2014 was successful enacted and later assented to on 24th December 2014. Subsequently, the Physiotherapy Council Kenya (PCK) and the inaugural Council members were gazetted on the 15th September, 2015.
