Pain is caused due to the unpleasant sensory stimulation caused due to damage to the tissues by any means. Although majorly caused by injuries, it is also prevalent in the case of diseases such as arthritis, ulcers, cancer, and multiple sclerosis. Acute pain is generated for a short period, whereas chronic pain is persistent for extended time periods. Several pain management drugs and devices are available in the market that work by blocking the nerve stimulators by transmitting the unpleasant sensory experience to the brain.

Few years back WHO reported a shortage of oral morphine in Egypt. This does not appear to have been due to cost, since fentanyl, hydromorphone, and oxycodone were still available.
