Egypt’s Hepatitis C drug market size stood at USD xx billion in 2019 and is projected to reach USD xx billion by 2028, exhibiting a CAGR of xx% during the forecast period.

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that causes severe damage such as inflammation of the liver and can spread through contaminated blood. The advanced stages of hepatitis C can also lead to liver damage, thereby creating severe health risks. The severity of hepatitis C has created a huge emphasis on the research and development of drugs associated with the treatment of this disease.

Egypt continues to report one of the highest incidences of Hepatitis C (HCV) in the world, estimated at 10-15mn sufferers in 2017. Secondary problems associated with HCV include cirrhosis of the liver, which was responsible for around half a million DALYs lost in Egypt in 2017. The Egyptian government is upholding its pledge towards reducing the HCV burden in the country. The MoH recently announced its plans to strengthen the national campaign against the virus, largely through greater cooperation with pharmaceutical manufacturers of antivirals.

Egypt, one of the countries with the largest burden of hepatitis C infection in the world, has made significant advances since 2018 towards hepatitis C elimination through a large countrywide public health effort to screen the entire population aged 18 years and older (a target population of 62.5 million) and link those in need to care. Nearly 50 million adults and 9 million children aged 12–18 years were screened, and 1.5 million additional persons had started treatment by mid-2019. This constitutes one of the largest public health efforts to date towards hepatitis C elimination in low- and middle-income countries. Egypt now plans to support other countries in the sub-Saharan African region in their scale-up efforts.

According to World Bank’s projections, if Egypt continues its current treatment path, it will spend nearly $4 billion on Hepatitis C by 2030. This will improve and boost the Hepatitis C drug demand in the Egyptian market.

However, Egypt and Pakistan reduced their order volumes by 60 percent in 2019. These countries have treated the majority of their diagnosed patients and are now focusing on case-finding activities. As countries approach elimination by treating most of their patients, the demand for DAAs in those specific countries might peak and then decline.
